Malt Maniacs
One of the reasons the 'Deviant Drams' section isn't finished yet is the time and effort it took to maintain another whisky web site; Malt Maniacs. It started out as a section of this Malt Madness site in 1997 and eventually evolved into a separate site by itself: an international whisky community with an independent 'amateur' spirit. During the fifteen years after we launched Malt Maniacs, things kept evolving and in 2006 Serge Valentin added his Whiskyfun website to Malt Madness and Malt Maniacs to form an on-line whisky trinity.
Unfortunately (from my perspective), the evolution of Malt Maniacs didn't stop there.
Over the years, more and more (semi-)professionals joined our team and people who used to be pure amateurs became commercially involved in the whisky business - with the potential conflicts of interest that go with it. As a result, I personally felt that the group gradually started to lose a little bit of its independence. At the same time, a bunch of team members started to focus more on their own whisky projects, which left them with less time to participate in our collective efforts. We tried to attract 'fresh blood', but the trend away from the group effort still continued. For 15 years I've tried to maintain a respectful distance between our collective and the whisky industry. Nevertheless, it seemed to me that part of the maniacs kept moving closer and closer towards the alcohol lobby. I finally realised that my own sentiments about authenticity and independence were just a little different from those of some members of the malt maniacs, as well as part of our audience.
Mind you: I'm not saying that the feelings of others are 'wrong' - they are just different from my own.
And I'm not saying that the other maniacs are not independent either - just that I start to feel uncomfortable in grey areas where others are still comfortable. Independence comes in many shapes and sizes. Since I've grown way too old and stubborn to change my sentiments, I finally decided to step back and retire in early 2012. This would allow a new generation of maniacs to shape the future of the site, the MMMonitor whisky database and the MM&F group on Facebook.
So, that´s the story of Malt Madness and Malt Maniacs in a nutshell - I hope you enjoy some of the overload of whisky information that we've collected on these pages over the past fifteen years.
Sweet drams,

Doch nicht nur Johannes nimmt seinen Hut.
In the wake of this, also Paul Dejong decided to leave the group for personal reasons.
